United States Presidential Election of 1956

US Presidential1900s

Eisenhower re-elected 457 to 73 over Stevenson in the television era's first rematch.

Overview

The first rematch since 1900, and the first under television's full glare, reaffirmed Eisenhower's popularity amid peace and prosperity. He improved on 1952, winning 457 to 73 with 57.4 percent, taking seven southern states while Stevenson held the Deep South on civil rights federal intervention. Eisenhower's health scares and the simultaneous Suez and Hungary crises shadowed the campaign. The 1956 result marked the last Republican popular and electoral landslide until 1972's very different verdict.
