United States Presidential Election of 1952

US Presidential1900s

Eisenhower defeated Stevenson 442 to 89, returning the Republicans after twenty years.

Overview

NATO commander Dwight Eisenhower, courted by both parties, accepted the Republican nomination, pledged to go to Korea, and beat Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson 442 to 89 with 55.2 percent, ending five consecutive Democratic wins. Eisenhower's personal popularity carried coattails that delivered Congress, and his attacks on Korea, communism, and corruption hit the tired-party theme. The South began its partisan shift, with five southern states and their electoral votes going Republican for the first time since Reconstruction.
