United States Presidential Election of 1892
Cleveland returned, 277 to 145, the first and for 132 years the only nonconsecutive-term president.
Overview
Cleveland's rematch victory over Harrison, 277 to 145 with 22 for Populist James Weaver, made him the twenty-second and twenty-fourth president, the first to win nonconsecutive terms, unmatched until 2024. The Populists' 8.5 percent and five states showed agrarian revolt against the gold standard. Cleveland's second term opened with the Panic of 1893 and the Pullman strike, disasters that sank the Democrats and set the money-question realignment of 1896.
