Ukrainian Presidential Election of 2004
Massive fraud annulled, the Orange Revolution forced a rerun won by Yushchenko 52 to 44.
Overview
The November 21 runoff between Viktor Yushchenko, poisoned by dioxin during the campaign, and prime minister Viktor Yanukovych was declared for Yanukovych despite exit polls showing the opposite and evidence of systematic falsification. Hundreds of thousands occupied Kyiv's Maidan in the Orange Revolution; the Supreme Court annulled the runoff, and the December 26 revote gave Yushchenko 51.99 to 44.2. The episode asserted Ukrainian civil society's power, exposed Russian backing of the loser, and set the geopolitical alignments that exploded again in 2014 and 2022.
