Myanmar General Election of 1990
Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD won 80 percent of seats the junta then refused to honor.
Overview
The May 27, 1990 election, promised by the junta after crushing the 1988 uprising, delivered the National League for Democracy 392 of 492 seats, about 80 percent, despite Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest since July 1989. The junta, expecting fragmentation, annulled the result, claiming a constitution must first be written, and kept power for another two decades. Suu Kyi won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize. The NLD's 2015 landslide finally brought elected government, making 1990 history's starkest case of a stolen unanimous mandate.
